Cycas revoluta, also known as the Sago Palm, is not a palm despite its appearance. It is actually a Cycad that dates back to prehistoric times. However, it is well-known for its lovely feathery fronds, similar to palms. The Cycas’ trunk is called a caudex. Stiff, lustrous fronds develop in a rosette from the trunk, starting straight and arching beautifully as they age. New leaves appear all at once rather than maturing gradually. This occasional flush of new growth is referred to as a ‘break’. New leaves are delicate, so avoid upsetting the plant at this time. However, if the leaves begin to tilt towards a source of light, turn the plant gently every day until they harden.
