Euphorbia milii is a perennial succulent shrub originating in Madagascar. It is popularly known as the crown of thorns. The legend has it that this plant was used to make a crown worn by Jesus during his crucifixion. No one can say for sure whether it’s true but the fact that spiky thorns stick out of Euphorbia milii’s shoots is undeniable. The crown of thorns, its rebarbative name aside, will get acclimatized in most homes and, if properly taken care of, will reward the eye of its owner with bright red, orange, pink, yellow, or white bracts surrounding charmless green flowers blooming all year round. Don’t let this plant’s sap get on your skin or into your eyes: it’s a notorious irritant which is poisonous not only for humans, but also for pets. So, be careful when handling your Euphorbia milii and keep children and pets away from it.
